(Investor Seminar News) Monetisation to erode capital through inflation warns investment manager – HedgeWeek

Friday 30 September 2011 @ 8:05 am

In the opinion of the firm’s eponymous founders, Dr Ana Armstrong and Patrick Armstrong, cautious investors drawn to government bonds – which have seen yields tumble this year – are merely destroying the real value of their wealth. Mr Armstrong thinks inflation will be the most important issue for investors to deal with over the next decade. Armstrong IM expects UK inflation to average 4 per cent p. Equity stocks favoured by Armstrong IM include pharmaceuticals and utilities and a basket of consumer stocks including Louis Vuitton, Tiffany and Swatch “because these are price setters in an inflationary environment”, said Mr Armstrong. Inflation is firmly top-of-mind for Armstrong IM in its pursuit of capital appreciation through portfolio diversification – it could be a long battle if monetisation prevails. read more

Leveraging on securitisation to diversify investment portfolios – BusinessDay- Topic: Investor Seminar News

Thursday 29 September 2011 @ 7:37 am

Securitisation provides a relatively risk-free investment for the investors and is basically good-quality asset, helping the investors to diversify their portfolios, states Olu Abayomi-Sanya, CEO, Goldbanc Management Associates Limited (GMA). Speaking at a day seminar on assets securitisation organised by GMA in Lagos, Abayomi-Sanya describes the process as a method whereby non-tradable or illiquid financial assets are transformed into tradable securities. To him, it involves the transfer of an asset or a pool of assets, directly or indirectly, by the owner of the assets to a special purpose vehicle, which is funded through an issue of debt securities or notes backed by the cash flows generated by the assets. The GMA boss states further that asset securitisation leads to transparency in the balance sheet of the originators of the process as it results in identifiable assets. According to him, the typical users of assets securitisation include mortgage financiers, finance companies, banks, estate developers, managers, public utilities, intellectual property holders, insurance companies, aviation companies, governments, toll plaza managers, among others. read more

(Investor Seminar News) Gold investment shift leaves market vulnerable – MarketWatch

Saturday 24 September 2011 @ 7:03 am

LONDON -(MarketWatch)- The changing makeup of gold investment makes the metal more vulnerable to steep losses if sentiment toward the metal sours, the managing director of commodities research at Barclays Capital said Thursday. While the introduction of physically-backed gold exchange-traded products has been a key driver in gold’s recent bull-run, this development could also undermine the metal if the opportunity cost of holding the metal rises, Kevin Norrish told the S&P GSCI Commodities Seminar in London. (Investor Seminar News) Investing: 'It's simple, but it's not easy' – Canada.com

Wednesday 21 September 2011 @ 6:23 am

Two bear markets in the last dozen years have left consumers with a nasty hangover and maybe a bit of financial investment seminar burnout, but Larry Sarbit isn’t afraid of a skeptical crowd. Sarbit has reason to be confident because his track record is pretty good, said Dan Hallett, vice-president and director of asset management for Highview Financial Group. You can buy an ETF (exchange-traded fund) for almost nothing,” Sarbit said. Sarbit said he looks for long-term profitability, using an approach modelled on that of Warren Buffett, the renowned U. When Sarbit sold his fund to IA Clarington in 2008, more than half of it was in cash, but since mid-2010 he has been on a buying spree, scooping up what he sees as bargain U. read more

Topic: Investor Seminar News – Re-emergence of political risk scares investors:Foreign expert – Sunday Times.lk

Tuesday 20 September 2011 @ 5:43 am

More than two years after the end of Sri Lanka’s terrorism-eliminating conflict, the country is still struggling to attract foreign investments (FDI) mainly due to the re-emergence of political risk as a result of poor public relations with the rest of the world, an investment expert said in Colombo on Monday. If you look at the general perception as evidenced by Sri Lanka’s reputation in some international publications, for example, the OECD’s Country Risk Classification Report gives Sri Lanka a score of 6 from a range of 0 -6, alongside Angola, Georgia, Uganda and Iran. Similarly, the MIGA World Investment and Political Risk Report 2009 (Published in 2010) perceives Colombia, Uganda and Argentina to have less political risk than Sri Lanka. The AON 2011 Political Risk Map and the Maplecroft 2011 Political Risk Map put Sri Lanka in the company of Libya, Egypt and Peru. read more
