But what they may not point out is that the more enduring nature of the long-term investor is not a function of the fact they succeed at investing, it is that they are patient and patient people make fewer stupid mistakes. Not mistakes like picking the wrong stocks, underperforming or misreading the market, but stupid mistakes, terminal mistakes, mistakes that happen when you rush the market with unrealistic expectations about getting rich quick. Now I put their continued existence down to the fact that people want to gamble, are allowed to gamble and the sharemarket (and forex market) provides conveniently moving numbers on which to gamble. But what I haven’t mellowed to, and what annoys me and my industry colleagues and clients, is that a lot of the advertisements present a gambling product as an investment product and that they target, not gamblers, but a huge body of naive and vulnerable people who cannot – thanks to the appearance of these products and to the unwitting endorsement of the products by trusted media outlets that should know better – distinguish between a product that is designed to screw money out of them and investment. You don’t need a lecture on leverage but what may add some value is to make the point that if you have a dollar of debt but still invest in the sharemarket, you are leveraged. The only people who survive the derivatives markets for long (and options are just one of the derivatives markets) are professional traders, fund managers or sophisticated wealthy individuals writing call options against existing holdings. read more

Wrapping a presentation in story casts you as a mentor — the wise storyteller. Story can connect the audience to your material and whatever you’re trying to persuade them to do. If you have too much going on — both a verbal signal and a visual signal — the audience can’t process it all at the same time. It’s easier to just slap a bunch of stuff on a slide and wing it — throw a bunch of words together — than do something really carefully. A mentor wouldn’t use jargon or big words to try to impress because a mentor is someone who genuinely cares about the audience and their understanding of the subject matter. read more

Concluding a bilateral FTA may well help improve energy resource security for Japan, especially as countries like China, Korea and now India increasingly vie for Australian resources, with Australia already negotiating bilateral FTAs with all three of those nations. If I were in Japan, as I will be with my family over October-November, I would be limiting my consumption to imported beef ?” as well as to several other products from Australia, including even our green tea (which is particularly susceptible to excess radiation, according to random testing of food supplies being systematically carried out in Japan). More generally, Australian National University academic Kent Anderson suggests that people in Japan may be increasingly viewing this year?s problems as now more of a regional problem ?” one that does not imply radical rethinking and institutional change on the scale of the transformations occasioned by the 9-11 disaster in the US. The statement attempts to regain the high ground by urging greater efforts to achieve multilateral trade and investment liberalisation, drawing partly on a Productivity Commission report last year on FTA economics and policy recommendations, but also arguing that this sounder economic approach was a focus ?” along with unilateral liberalisation and deregulation ?” of the Hawke/Keating governments. read more

A trade deal with China could spur the most economic growth for Korea compared to other free trade deals. In fact, while Korea’s FTAs with the European Union and the pending one with the United States are estimated to bring up the nation’s gross domestic product by less than two percent, a trade deal with China is expected to result in a near three percent increase. Experts say the trade pact will boost the nation’s exports to China by 30 percent with Korea’s auto industry seeing a 97 percent jump in its outbound shipments. Korea International Trade Association] “Concerns about Korea’s agricultural sector are rising because there is a huge price gap between Korean and Chinese products. Trade representatives from the two countries have been holding unofficial preliminary talks regarding the trade deal, while experts in Seoul have been participating in a number of discussions similar to Tuesday’s seminar. read more

APG utilized its new third generation S3000 Series Dual Fuel System which relies on APG’s read-only CAN-bus Turbocharged Natural Gas (TM) technology to seamlessly meter and control the various gaseous fuels within all original OEM diesel engine performance parameters. APG’s dual fuel system converts diesel engines and diesel generators to function more efficiently and at a lower operating cost (average net fuel cost savings of 20% – 35%) by seamlessly displacing up to 40%-60% of the normal diesel fuel consumption with either CNG, LNG, pipeline gas, well-head gas, or other qualified bio-methane gases. In addition, the introduction of natural gas through APG’s dual fuel system does not impact diesel engine power or torque and will assist in extending the engine’s oil life as natural gas is a cleaner burning fuel compared to diesel. With some of the larger drilling rigs consuming over 2,000 gallons of diesel fuel per drilling day, APG can deliver a 1,000 gallon per day reduction in diesel fuel consumption resulting in a less than a three month payback based on the number of drilling hours per year. That’s correct, self-professed “leading investment services company” JB Global does not describe its Berkshire Hathaway Income and Equity Accelerator offering as a derivative at all. JB founder Justin Beeton is rather more effusive than that, telling a recent investment seminar that this was a “capital protected investment in Berkshire Hathaway”. Rather, these “units” are a Deferred Purchase Agreement, or nothing better than a right to some “Delivery Assets” – shares in BHP, Westpac and the like, not Berkshire Hathaway – at some future point. There appears to be a promise from RBS that it will pay out a return calculated by reference to “volatility managed exposure” to call options in Berkshire Hathaway. read more
