BANGKOK, Dec 21 – Thailand’s investment trend next year will be positive, while investors will continue to seek promotional privileges as much as of this year at around Bt400 billion, according to Board of Investment (BoI) Secretary-General Atchaka Sibunruang. Speaking at a seminar on "Investment Directions with the Thai Economy’s New Dimensions in 2011", organised by the Investor Club Association and National Institute of Development Administration (NIDA), Ms Atchaka said the investment atmosphere will be positive next year thanks to the improving domestic political situation, and lessened concerns regarding the Map Ta Phut Industrial Estate in the eastern province of Rayong, as well as more invesment confidence by foreign investors in the petrochemical and iron industries. Other industries with a positive investment trend are electronics, home electric appliances, hard disk drive production, health, tourism, agriculture, automobiles and automotive spare parts, specially after five eco-car projects have been approved for investments in the country. The BoI secretary-general said the Thai economy next year will likely grow 4-5 per cent but it will also depend on the exchange rate of the Thai baht and the global economy, particularly in Europe, the US and Japan, Thailand’s main markets. Meanwhile, Ms Atchaka warned that the government’s plan to reduce BoI tax-related privileges creates concerns for foreign investors choosing Thailand as their production base for export, and they might lose interest in investing here. She pointed out that Singapore, while having a lower corporate income tax rate than Thailand, provides privileges to foreign investment high-technology industrial projects. read more

Developing strategic emerging industries will open a new investment channel for private capital and might help divert a certain amount from the virtual economy to real business operations. However, due to the incomplete financial system, immature capital market and policy restrictions in the investment field, the investment channels for private capital are very limited. First, a comprehensive investment and financing chain for emerging industrial development should be set up, including angel investment, venture capital and equity investment. Angel funds should be actively encouraged and the angel fund investment mechanism must be gradually improved by way of establishing an angel investment network and information exchange platform, as well as optimizing the regional business environment, so that private capital can be transformed into reliable venture capital.
