This week I spent some time listening and speaking at a Canadian Investor Relations Institute seminar entitled The Essentials of IR. Each quarter, the investor relations officer or CFO would write a quick summary release — three to four pages at most — put it on the wire, file it with the appropriate regulatory bodies and the “widespread disclosure” criterion was met. If you were a large cap company, say in the TSX 60, conversing with key reporters, analysts and institutional investors, such as the Ontario Teachers Pension Fund, certainly filled in the blanks in terms of necessary outreach. A small cap company could likely cover widespread disclosure with a news release and a couple of dozen phone calls — or at some Vancouver mining companies by speaking loudly near the office door. And now social media offers rich opportunities to syndicate that same content, get a pulse on corporate reputation — which affects stock prices — fill the stock gossip bulletin boards with facts instead of allowing rumours to run rampant and reach out to stakeholders in ways they prefer. read more

Most of the people I spoke with at the investor day said that their investment conviction in CHBT increased significantly as a result of the investor day, and that the concerns they had from short rumors were put to rest. The most important part of each stack was a document from the Agricultural Bank of China which showed the actual taxes paid by Shanghai Shining into the Agricultural Bank of China, where the tax authority has its bank account for receiving taxes. The reader should note that these figures are taxes paid by Shanghai Shining only, and as such provide a good justification of the retail business and its profitability. First these figures include income taxes and net VAT paid by Shanghai Shining and secondly any taxes or VAT from Growing Bioengineering, the bulk business, are not reflected in these figures. The Securities and Exchange Board of India is constantly adopting measures to promote investor protection, which in turn, would lead to market development, Mr C. Addressing a seminar on Investor Protection and Market Development organised jointly by the Cochin Chamber of Commerce and Industry and the Ernakulam Branch of SIRC of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India, he said SEBI is routinely setting standards and supervising and enforcing measures aimed at widening and deepening of different segments of the securities market and in enhancing the level of investor protection. While the main focus of reforms in the primary market has been to safeguard and stimulate investor interests in capital issues by strengthening norms, in the secondary market, the emphasis has remained on making the market transparent, efficient and modern, he added. While it is true that investor protection tops the SEBI agenda, there is a felt need to determine the long run equilibrium relationship between shareholder protection and stock market development and ultimately their relationship with economic growth in the context of India, he said.
