Based on complaints, Michigan’s Office of Financial and Insurance Regulation investigated and recently ordered John Missitti, a Flint tax preparer affiliated with Nevada-based GetMoni, as well as the firm’s president, Ron Brito, to cease selling investment products, mainly because they weren’t registered in Michigan. Older investors are being targeted with increasingly complex investment scams involving unregistered securities, promissory notes, charitable gift annuities, viatical settlements, and Ponzi schemes all promising inflated returns. Michigan investors need to be on guard against a rise in investment scams that prey upon members of groups or affiliations, such as religious or ethnic communities, the elderly or professional groups, known as affinity group fraud. The Ponzi scheme is a house-of-cards swindle in which high returns are paid to initial investors out of the funds of later investors, who end up losing all or most of their money to the promoter. With the high price of gold, investors should beware of gold bullion scams in which the seller offers to retain “purchased” gold in a “secure vault” and promises to sell the gold for the investor as it gains in value. read more

Nov 27, 2009 (LBO) – The Sri Lanka Ports Authority will issue a request for proposals for investments in a new port being built in the island’s southern Hambantota region by the second week of December, an official said. SLPA chairman Priyath Wickrama said business opportunities in the new port range from cement grinding and bagging, fertiliser bagging, and warehousing to vehicle transhipment, ship repair and ship supplies like food and water. Investors can lease land, enter into an equity-sharing joint venture with the SLPA or pay royalty based on production or volume, he told a seminar organised by the Sri Lanka Shippers’ Council to highlight investment opportunities. The Hambantota port will be a ‘free port’ where not taxes or other government levies will be charged in order to make it attractive for investors, Wickrama said. The aim was to develop the port, Hambantota city and the area in a planned manner to avoid the kind of unplanned development and illegal urban construction that had caused problems in expanding Colombo port. read more

With the national debt now topping $12 trillion, the White House estimates that the government?s tab for servicing the debt will exceed $700 billion a year in 2019, up from $202 billion this year, even if annual budget deficits shrink drastically. Indeed, the government paid less interest on its debt this year than in 2008, even though it added almost $2 trillion in debt. Rowe Price, estimated that the Treasury?s tab for debt service this year would have been $221 billion higher if it had faced the same interest rates as it did last year. Wall Street firms advising the Treasury recently estimated that the Fed?s purchases of Treasury bonds and mortgage-backed securities pushed down long-term interest rates by about one-half of a percentage point. Kolkata, Nov 20 (PTI) Securities and Exchange Board of India is in the process of examining whether registered portfolio managers invest in instruments other than listed securities, an official of the agency said. The regulator has laid down various norms for portfolio managers to protect investor’s interest. SEBI is looking at other structured products besides listed securities, Nair said at a seminar on Portfolio Management Services organised by Indian Chamber of Commerce here today. At present, there are 247 portfolio managers registered with SEBI and total assets under management by these entities stand at Rs 2. SEBI, he added, is also trying to usher in more reforms in the primary and secondary markets to make the capital markets more fair, transparent and inclusive.
