The Securities Commission is warning financial advisers to shape up or face being shipped out under new disclosure rules. The Institute of Financial Advisers, which has about 1500 members, says the rules will mean "unprincipled and incompetent" advisers could face real penalties or be taken out of business. Disclosure rules will make it clear if advisers get commissions if an investor renews the investment after a set period. The Institute of Financial Advisers represents 1500 financial advisers, with about 600,000 clients. read more

An 81-year-old man was sentenced to 28 years in prison Friday in an investment scam that prosecutors say seeped across half the country and bilked 1,800 people, many of them elderly, of about $190 million. John Heath, who was convicted last month alongside his son Daniel Heath and another man, also was ordered to pay $117 million in restitution to the clients who invested directly through him. Prosecutors said the company ran a scam dating back to the early 1990s that promised clients their money would go into fixed investments with little or no risk. Another business associate, Larre Schlarmann, is serving a 15-year prison term after pleading guilty in 2005 to money laundering and fraud for his involvement in the scheme. read more

Launching a business has always been tough, but the credit crunch and slowing economy are making the effort even more challenging, said Erin Baldwin, founder of The Baldwin Companies and WeLoveStartups. Baldwin has always focused her attention on young companies, helping them write business plans, find financing and implement their strategies. Baldwin started her own business after 22 years in corporate jobs in California and Massachusetts doing initial public offerings, acquisitions, investor relations and risk management. Initially, Baldwin helped clients write business plans, organize office systems, professionalize corporate relations and plan events. Baldwin said her initial project to help Nix write a business plan in 2007 expanded to several projects including helping him search for financial backers. Because of tighter credit and equity, Baldwin has shifted clients’ focus on improving sales and cutting expenses “to help cash flow as opposed to taking on debt or spending too much time with presentations to investors. read more

Because of this, a big percentage of the population does not know that ordinary people can make money investing in the stock market. This is why the Philippine Stock Exchange, together with its trading partners, has been advocating the education of the public so that not only would it be able to widen the pool of domestic investors but also give ordinary people the chance to take advantage of the opportunities that the stock market can offer them to grow their money. The PSE and its partners like CitisecOnline are conducting regular seminars for free to “anyone who wants to learn how to invest in the stock market. The reason people are averse is because it’s not common knowledge and they don’t teach it in school but people know how to make a time deposit and people know what T-bill rates are,” Bate said. Bate added that the seminars can be supplemented by reading books on the stock market. read more
